Pets as Christmas Gifts

P. Scudder

The holiday season is upon us and many people impulsively adopt pets for themselves or family members. While this creature can be an exciting and heartwarming gift, there are definitely some considerations to take into account before making that purchase or signing that adoption agreement. Here is a basic checklist of some questions to consider:

1: Does the person have any allergies?

2: What kind of time commitment does the pet require?

3: What type of environment does the pet need (aquarium, hutch, wire kennel, aviary, fenced yard, barn, etc)?

4. How big of a financial commitment is involved in feeding and annual care?

5. What is the expected lifespan of the pet (Some pets can live over 20 years!)?

6. What kind of an impact will the new pet have on existing pets in the household?

7. If the pet is for a child, are the parents willing to take on primary responsibility when or if the child becomes disinterested in the pet?

8. For younger children, is Salmonella or other bacterial exposure a concern (Be aware of potential bacterial concerns such as Salmonella exposure with certain exotic pets and chickens. Young children tend to place their fingers in their mouth without washing their hands first, so exposure to certain bacteria are of greater concern.)?

A pet can be a joyous addition to the family and a great way for kids to learn how to nurture and be responsible for others. Doing some research on the pet that is desired may prevent a lot of stress for the family and for the creature that is being adopted or purchased. Every year shelters become burdened with discarded pets because of unrealistic expectations, being unprepared for the care involved or simply being unwanted by the person receiving the "surprise" gift. Please avoid the impulse purchase unless you are ready to be the primary person responsible for the health and wellbeing of the pet. If you are ready to adopt or purchase a pet, do your homework. Free pets often come with unforeseen health issues or behavioral problems. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions and make sure you are okay with the answers you receive before taking the plunge!
